Company History |
| |
Southwest Windpower (SWWP) was founded by David Calley and Andrew Kruse in 1986 to provide low cost reliable battery charging small wind generators for rural areas of the world. SWWP's first product was the 300 watt WINDSEEKER TM made from a modified Ford TM alternator. SWWP launched the AIR TM wind generator in 1994 . AIR (400) watts quickly become the best selling battery-charging wind generator in history ,selling 18,000 units in over 100 countries in its first two years. In 2000, SWWP acquired the assets of Duluth Minnesota-based World Power Technologies, producer of 900 to 3000 watt wind generators. Two years later, SWWP introduced the AIR-XTM series, the first small wind generators to incorporate microprocessor-based controls yielding better performance and reliability. To date, the Whisper and AIR-X are the best-selling small wind generators in their market segment worldwide with over 90,000 units sold.
Growth continued in 2004, when Altira Technology Fund invested $2.3 million in SWWP and again in 2006. When Altira Partners, Rockport Partners and the Chevron Corporation provided &8 million in funding. This second round of financing was applied to final development and promotion of a new residential small wind appliance. |

Depending on the local wind resource and utility rates, a small wind energy system can reduce electricity bill by 50% to 90%. |
It can be installed as a stand-alone system, eliminating the high cost of extending utility power lines to a remote location, or it can be connected to the power grid, enabling the customer to sell excess power to the utility or buy additional power as needed. |
Over its 20- to 40-year life, a small residential wind turbine can offset approximately 1.2 tons of air pollutants and 200 tons of carbon dioxide and other "greenhouse" gases. |
Coupled with solar to create a hybrid system can added to the operational efficiency. |

Solar Panel Working ? |
| |
| |
Photovoltaic cells convert sunlight directly into electricity. When sunlight strikes a PV cell, electrons are dislodged, creating an electrical current.
Photovoltaic cells power many of the small calculators and wrist watches in use every day. More complex systems provide electricity to pump water, power communications equipment light homes, and run appliances. Beyond the utility power line , PV is often the lowest-cost means to provide electricity, and almost always simplest and cleanest to operate. |

| |
| Q.1 |
How long will PV last? |
| |
| |
PV modules have been tested in controlled settings and in the field, with results showing module lifetimes in excess of 20 years. Other system components have varied lifetimes (batteries can last 2-15 years, and power electronics are the most sensitive components). |
| Q.2 |
What kinds of PV are available ? |
| |
| |
The majority of power modules in use since 1955 are made of single- or multicrystalline silicon, though several manufacturers are producing large quantities of amorphous silicon power modules. Most solar- powered consumer products use thin-film amorphous silicon PV.
Satellites and other space applications have used single-crystal silicon, single-crystal gallium arsenide, and test systems of thin-film materials. Several companies are manufacturing thin-film modules of cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium diselenide (CuInSe2, or CIS), but these are mostly pilot production at this time and are not available in commercial quantities. |
| Q.3 |
What makes up a PV system ? |
| |
| |
A PV system comprises the PV modules and the balance of systems (support structure, wiring, storage, power electronics).

| Q.6 |
What happens during a cyclone ? |
| |
| Q.1 |
Will the noise bother my neighbors? |
| |
| |
The noise level of most modern residential turbines is around 52-55 decibels. They are audible, if you are outdoors and listening for it, but no noisier than your average refrigerator. . |
| Q.2 |
What about visual impact ? |
| |
| |
Side furling: rotor turns to the side during extreme winds |
| Q.3 |
Do wind turbines kill birds? |
| |
| |
While birds can collide with any structure, reports of small wind turbines killing birds are very rare. A sliding glass door is more dangerous to birds than a small wind turbine.. |
| Q.4 |
Will it interfere with TV / Radio reception ? |
| |
| |
Small wind turbines have not been found to interfere with TV or radio reception. The rotors are made of fiberglass or Composite carbon both of which materials are transparent to electromagnetic waves such as radio or TV.. |
| Q.5 |
Can wind supply power an outage ? |
| |
| |
Wind can supply electricity during a utility power outage if your system includes storage batteries and a way to disconnect from the utility grid (if you are connected). |
| Q.6 |
What happens during a cyclone ? |
| |
| |
Small wind turbines are equipped with overspeed protection and are designed to furl out of the wind during extreme gusts. |

Can we operate television, refrigerator, fan etc. on solar lighting system ? |
| |
| Q.1 |
Where can we use Solar Lighting system ? |
| |
| |
Solar lighting system can be used anywhere where we need lighting. it is a source of clean energy. Solar lighting system can provide the lighting to many applications as under, from small hut to bungalow (i.e. any residential place ), from small shop to big show room (i.e. any commercial place ), rural tribal, hilly & remote areas, study rooms, place of worship, farm houses, clinics, hospitals, offices, bank, outdoor lighting in compound & garden, streets, campus area etc. |
| Q.2 |
How many light/lamp will be available in solar lighting system ? |
| |
| |
There are four models of solar lighting system having one to four lights respectively. Special system can be made available if number of CFL increases. |
| Q.3 |
How much light a solar Lamp provide ? |
| |
| |
In solar lighting system lamps used are CFL ( Compact Fluorescent Lamp ). It consumes 70 - 80 % less energy than ordinary incandescent bulbs. The light output of 5,7,9, & 11 watts CFL's can be compared to 25,40,60 & 75 watts ordinary bulb respectively. |
| Q.4 |
How much time a solar lamp/CFL will provide the light ? |
| |
| |
CFL operating hours depend upon solar lighting model & quantity of CFL's used in it. In a model IV solar lighting system 4 CFL's of 7 watts rating deliver light for about 3 hours. |
| Q.5 |
What will happen in rainy season ? |
| |
| |
Solar lighting system generate electricity in cloudy weather although their output is reduced solar PV needs only sunlight not the heat of the sun, therefore the system even can work in rainy season i.e. in diffused light conditions. Hence, in our area, solar lighting system works almost throughout the year. |
| Q.6 |
How the solar lighting systemwork ? |
| |
| |
When sunrays falls on solar cell inside the solar module electricity is generated. This electricity is stored in the battery. This battery delivers electricity to the lamps ( CFL ) whenever required. The charge controller regulates total operation of the system. |
| Q.7 |
What is the expected life of using components in solar lighting system ? |
| |
| |
The expected life of various components of solar lighting system is as follows ; |
| |
| |
Sr.No. |
Components |
Expected Life |
1. |
Solar PV Module |
20 - 25 years. |
2. |
Battery |
8 - 10 years. |
3. |
CFL |
4 - 5 years. |
4. |
Charge Controller |
8 - 10 years. |
| Q.8 |
Can we operate television, refrigerator, fan etc. on solar lighting system ? |
| |
| |
Yes, But these appliances consume more power due to their high wattage. So the solar modules, batteries etc. required will be of much higher rating, As the major cost in solar lighting system is of module, hence the total cost of such a system to run above said appliances would be very high. |
